Thoreau Blog

Henry David Thoreau, born David Henry Thoreau, was an unusual person. Born in Concord, Massachusetts, he spent his whole life in the area.Thoreau was an author, a naturalist, a transcendentalist, a teacher, a philosopher and definitely an individualist with strong opinions which he never hesitated to voice.

Ralph Waldo Emerson encouraged Thoreau to start a journal when he was young, and that journal grew to fill many volumes.

He didn’t hesitate to espouse unpopular causes, and always stood up for what he believed, even spending a night in jail protesting his poll tax.

Thoreau is best known for his book, Walden, based on his two years living in a cabin he built at Walden Pond.

I know if Thoreau were living now, he would have many opinions on current affairs and would make sure those opinions were known.

I’m a freelance writer and photographer, author of five young adult biographies, one about Thoreau. My other five published books are in the areas of history and geography. I’m a retired teacher and in my spare time enjoy birding, scrapbooking and photography, as well as travel.
